The Small Things

Treasure the small things in life. It's not only true for food, but everything in our lives...

We become so caught up in our daily responsibities that we totally lose perspective on why we have those responsibilities in the first place. Ultimately, our chaotic lives blind us from our purpose and the meaningful things in life. How many times have you taken a step back from your mayhem and looked at what's happening to your life and where you're heading?...

I've just got off the phone to a good friend of mine, here in Singapore, and he was informing me of some bad news relating to a traineeship. We were on the phone for almost an hour, speaking about this. And then he asked me an important question; how have things been going for you?

It's amazing how one simple, unassuming question could hold with it so much power. It enabled me to take that essential step back from my mayhem. It was clear to me that I wasn't firing on cylinders and I needed his help. He willfully stepped in at my time of need and empowered me with his support. The difference of this small and selfless guesture is considerable. It's made all the difference for me!

The moral of this story; never forget the huge potential that the people around you have to make the differences in your lives. Yet, for them to make that difference, you have to be open and aware enough to take that step, the step out of your bubble. Only then will you be able to harness the endless power of interdependence.

...the big changes start with the small things...

Why it's great being Asian...

As a westerner - or should that be uhngmo(?!) - here in Asia, you have a refreshing perspective on how great it is to an Asian. Ultimately, you realize how much we're missing out on, living in the west!

Let me take one small example; food! In my western world, we eat flat, one dimensional food! Even the "exotic" chinese takeaway is bland. Come to think of it, our whole eating experience is dull.

Living and breathing Asia makes you recapture your love of food! Food no longer becomes a mundane essential of your existance. Oh no! Food is central to our lives! Embrace meal times. It's a unique social opportunity. You become closer to yourself, to the world around you and to mother nature herself. Love your food people, it's one of the hiden pleasures in life!

But why, Adam, are you telling me to embrace my food?!

I've just returned from a great evening at my toastmasters, public speaking club, deep within the heart of the financial district. I gave my first public speech and I learnt a huge deal :-) My friend, fellow toastmaster and AIESEC trainee, David Liem and I, ventured to Geylang, stopping by at a well known 24hour food court. With cheap beer, captivating food and lashings of local culture, we spent hours passing the time, contecting with each other, the local "supper culture", ourselves and, ultimately, our food!

It dawned on us that we'd spent a good 3 hours talking and we needed sleep! On my short venture home I stopped by a 24hour food shop. As soon as I walked in I stumbled across the coolest and tastiest Asian snack... Pocky! This Japanese delight is surprisingly addicitive and uniquely Asian. So I bought 8 packs!

They say treasure the simple things in life. Appreciating your food, how much simplier can you get? Give it a go! You may just discover something unexpectedly pleasing! That's why it's great being Asian!

The Aberdeen Tunnel... in Hong Kong!

While I was in Hong Kong, I was rather amused by the fact that we were about to travel through the Aberdeen Tunnel!... now, I was deprived of sleep, so it may have seemed oh so fascinating at the time, yet I wanted to share this with all my friends from AberdEEEEEn! I'm sure it'll bring a smile to your face! :-)

Welcome to My World!

If you're reading this, I proud to tell you that this is my first ever blog post!... That's right, call me a hairy neanderthal, a stubborn luddite, or simply slow! But this is it! The embarrassing thing to all of this is that even my Dad has got a blog before me!... no offence Dad!

If you're reading this then we've probably have bumped into each other in this life or the last! So, welcome! Welcome to my world!

This world can be described in one word... unpredictable! My spontaneity may surprise you. You'll get a sense of my adventure; I very much hope it will inspire. I expect you'll probably be baffled from my ramblings and confused by my muses. And you may well start wondering how the people around me remain stable. Yet, whatever you take from my world, please embrace my thoughts. Open your mind to be challenged. Try and put yourself in my well-worn flip-flops. And, at the end of your stopover, I hope you'll be smiling :-)

Enjoy!
